Somalia Steps Up Engagement with Indonesia on Immigration Cooperation
GOOBJOOG NEWS | JAKARTA: Somalia and Indonesia have discussed strengthening cooperation between their immigration authorities, including technical expertise sharing and institutional capacity-building, as Mogadishu seeks to expand its international partnerships.
Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hassan Mohamed Ali, led a federal government delegation in talks with Indonesia’s Minister of Immigration and Corrections, General Agus Andrianto, focusing on improving cooperation in immigration management and related services.
The discussions also explored opportunities for technical knowledge exchange, closer coordination between relevant government agencies and stronger institutional ties.
The meeting forms part of wider efforts by Somalia and Indonesia to deepen bilateral relations. The two countries have maintained diplomatic ties since December 1960, with cooperation traditionally covering education, trade and diplomatic engagement. Indonesia’s embassy in Nairobi is also accredited to Somalia, while Somalia maintains an embassy in Jakarta.
The talks come amid broader diplomatic engagement between the two countries. On November 4, Somalia’s deputy foreign minister also held discussions in Jakarta with Indonesian Vice Foreign Minister Muhammad Anis Matta on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, maritime security and development.
Indonesia has expressed interest in strengthening economic engagement with Somalia, including exploring trade opportunities linked to Somalia’s membership in the East African Community. The two sides have also discussed cooperation in education, health, maritime affairs and diplomatic training.
The latest engagements reflect efforts by Mogadishu and Jakarta to broaden their longstanding diplomatic relationship into practical cooperation across government institutions and economic sectors.
