GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming the United Kingdom’s prime minister, saying he looked forward to strengthening relations between the two countries as Britain begins a new political chapter.

In a message posted on X, the president described the UK as a key partner in Somalia’s state-building and development efforts and expressed hope that bilateral cooperation would deepen under Burnham’s administration.

“Warm congratulations to the new PM of the UK and Leader of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham,” President Mohamud wrote. “The UK is a valued partner in Somalia’s state-building and development journey. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between our two countries.”

Britain has been one of Somalia’s closest international partners for more than a decade, supporting efforts to strengthen government institutions, improve security, expand humanitarian assistance and promote economic development. London has also played a leading diplomatic role in mobilising international backing for Somalia’s political and security reforms.

Burnham took office on Monday after succeeding Keir Starmer as leader of the governing Labour Party and was formally appointed prime minister by King Charles III. In his first address outside Downing Street, he pledged to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, end rough sleeping and restore public confidence in government.

The exchange of messages signals Somalia’s intention to maintain close engagement with one of its most important Western partners as the two countries continue cooperating on security, governance and development priorities.
