GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Tuesday to offer condolences following the death of the emir’s father, former ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, reaffirming the close ties between the two countries.

During the meeting at Lusail Palace, President Mohamud expressed Somalia’s solidarity with Qatar during its period of national mourning and conveyed condolences on behalf of the Somali government and people to the emir, the royal family and the Qatari people.

The Somali president prayed for the late Sheikh Hamad and said Somalia stood alongside Qatar during the time of bereavement.

Emir Sheikh Tamim thanked Mohamud for travelling to Doha to convey his condolences, describing the gesture as a reflection of the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Somalia and Qatar.

The meeting comes as governments from across the Middle East, Africa and beyond continue to pay tribute to Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 until handing power to his son in 2013. Widely regarded as the architect of modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad oversaw the country’s transformation into one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas while expanding its global diplomatic and development role.

Somalia and Qatar have strengthened their partnership in recent years through cooperation in humanitarian assistance, infrastructure, investment and development projects.

Doha has remained one of Somalia’s key development partners, supporting reconstruction efforts and public service delivery as the Horn of Africa nation pursues economic reforms and institutional rebuilding.
