GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said the country has entered a new phase in implementing its constitution, as he renewed commitments to political reforms and direct elections during celebrations marking the 83rd anniversary of the Somali Youth League.

Speaking in Mogadishu during events marking Somali Youth Day and the founding of SYL, the president said preparations were underway for the separation of Parliament and the National Assembly as part of Somalia’s constitutional implementation process.

“The implementation of the constitution has officially begun,” he said, adding that the separation of the two institutions would take place soon.

President Mohamud also reaffirmed that his government’s constitutional term would end on May 15, 2027, amid ongoing national debate over Somalia’s political transition and future electoral system.

The remarks come as Somalia pushes ahead with political reforms aimed at moving away from the country’s long-standing indirect clan-based model toward broader direct elections.

The president also highlighted what he described as Somalia’s growing international standing, saying the country had regained recognition and increased participation in global decision-making platforms after years of isolation and instability.

“Today, Somalia is part of the world’s most important decision-making bodies,” he told the gathering.

The event brought together senior officials, youth groups and members of the public to commemorate the role played by the Somali Youth League in the country’s struggle for independence during the colonial period.

Founded in the 1940s, the SYL became Somalia’s first political movement and is widely regarded as a symbol of Somali nationalism and independence.
