President Mohamud Vows Maritime Growth, Stronger Protections at Ports Launch
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has pledged to transform the country’s coastline into a driver of economic growth, as he outlined plans to expand port infrastructure and strengthen maritime governance.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport headquarters in Mogadishu, Mohamud said the government is focused on upgrading ports to international standards to boost trade and connect Somali industries to global markets.
He stressed that developing the maritime sector is central to the country’s economic strategy, describing the coastline as a key national asset with the potential to generate growth and investment.
The president also underscored the need to safeguard Somalia’s territorial waters, calling for stronger enforcement to combat illegal activities and ensure sustainable management of marine resources.
He said the government remains committed to protecting the country’s maritime environment while maximising its economic potential for future generations.
Somalia has increasingly prioritised its blue economy in recent years, seeking to capitalise on its long coastline while addressing challenges such as illegal fishing and weak regulatory capacity.
