Prominent Mogadishu Cleric Sheikh Qasim Naji Yaasheey Dies Aged 95
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Sheikh Qasim Naji Yaasheey, a respected Islamic cleric and longtime muezzin in Mogadishu’s Shibis district, has died at the age of 95, family members confirmed.
The cleric, who was widely known in the district for his decades of religious service, spent much of his life serving as an imam and muezzin at a local mosque, where he became a familiar figure to generations of worshippers.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from residents, religious leaders and members of the wider Somali community, many of whom remembered him for his dedication to Islamic teachings and community service.
Born in 1930, Sheikh Qasim devoted much of his life to promoting Islamic values and serving local congregations in Mogadishu. Residents described him as a respected elder whose influence extended beyond the mosque through his involvement in community affairs and religious education.
The cleric recently attracted national attention after appearing in a widely shared social media video in which he spoke about the demolition of his home and his displacement, an issue that sparked public debate and drew sympathy from many Somalis.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.
Messages of condolence continued to circulate on social media, with many Somalis paying tribute to a man they described as a symbol of faith, humility and public service.
His passing comes at a time when many Somalis are reflecting on the contributions of elderly religious figures who played important roles in preserving religious education and community cohesion during decades of political upheaval and conflict.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by family members and local religious leaders.
