GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, and his Jubbaland Jubaland counterpart Ahmed Mohamed Islam, are expected to arrive in Mogadishu on May 13 as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States Embassy in Somalia to ease mounting political tensions over the country’s electoral process.
Goobjoog News has learned that the US Embassy in Mogadishu has intensified diplomatic engagements aimed at bridging differences between the Federal Government and opposition groups following the rejection by opposition figures of a recent political meeting called by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud under the Somali Opposition Forum.
According to sources familiar with the developments, the embassy has extended invitations to the leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland, members of the Future Forum, and opposition politicians in an effort to create conditions for dialogue and political consensus.
The diplomatic initiative comes amid escalating political tensions tied to the proposed one-person, one-vote elections, security concerns in Mogadishu, and growing disagreements between the Federal Government and opposition stakeholders over the direction of the country’s electoral process.
Sources say the United States is seeking to play a mediation role by encouraging Somali political actors to resolve their disputes through negotiations and dialogue.
