Somali Army Kills Senior Al-Shabaab Commanders in Lower Shabelle Offensive

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces killed two senior Al-Shabaab commanders in a military operation in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday, as part of an ongoing offensive against the militant group, officials said.

The Somali National Army (SNA) targeted an Al-Shabaab base in the Maduulow area, killing key figures Hassan Biid and Abdullahi Garweyne, military officials confirmed.

Both had been accused of terrorizing local communities.

Military sources said that the operation was carried out by the 26th Battalion of the 6th Brigade under the 60th Division. Troops also destroyed a militant hideout that had served as a safe haven for years.

“The fight against Al-Shabaab will continue until the region is fully cleared,” the military said in a statement.

The government forces have been carrying out operations to eliminate the Al-Shabaab militants who have been entrenched in parts of Lower Shabelle, launching frequent attacks on government officials and civilians.

A wider offensive is currently underway across Somalia, particularly in the two Shabelle regions, where government forces have reclaimed several areas previously held by the militants.
