Somali Gov’t, Opposition Reach Initial Breakthrough in Talks as President’s Term Ends in Two Days
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: A political meeting between leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition figures under the umbrella of the Somalia Future Forum concluded on Tuesday at the heavily fortified Halane complex in Mogadishu, marking what participants described as an early breakthrough in efforts to ease the country’s escalating political tensions.
Halane, which hosts the United Nations compound as well as most international organizations and foreign embassies operating in Somalia, has increasingly become a key venue for high-level political and diplomatic engagements.
Sources familiar with the discussions said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accepted one of the opposition’s key demands — the release of individuals detained over political activities, particularly those arrested during recent protests and political mobilizations in Mogadishu.
The move is being viewed as an initial confidence-building measure between the two sides, with opposition leaders reportedly welcoming the government’s decision as a positive step toward broader dialogue.
The parties also agreed to reconvene on Wednesday to continue discussions on unresolved issues surrounding Somalia’s electoral process and the wider political dispute that has fueled tensions in recent weeks.
The Halane talks are taking place at a highly sensitive political moment, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s current term set to expire on May 15 amid growing uncertainty over the electoral roadmap and mounting disagreements between the government and opposition groups.
The ongoing political standoff has fueled concerns over governance, political freedoms, and the future of Somalia’s election process, with opposition leaders accusing the government of suppressing dissent following recent arrests linked to anti-government protests and political activism in Mogadishu.
