GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Somali Police Force has strongly condemned an armed attack targeting a police checkpoint and other security facilities in Mogadishu’s Heliwaa district, describing the assault as an attempt to undermine public security and damage institutions serving the Somali people.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police said armed attackers used heavy weapons to target a checkpoint in the district before also attacking the Central Tax Protection Unit, a facility authorities said does not store weapons.

According to police, the assault caused damage to security equipment and public property, while also affecting nearby homes and businesses.

“The attackers deliberately targeted law enforcement facilities and public assets,” the statement said, adding that the attack endangered civilians and threatened public safety.

The Somali Police Force said officers responded to the incident and acted to contain the situation, while emphasizing their commitment to protecting residents and maintaining security.

The statement further stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

Police pledged that all individuals involved would be brought before the law.

The condemnation comes as Somali security agencies continue efforts to strengthen security in Mogadishu and other parts of the country amid ongoing threats from armed groups. Security officials have repeatedly warned that attacks on public institutions not only disrupt government services but also place civilians at risk.

Somali security agents have increased operations aimed at protecting key government facilities, public infrastructure and civilian areas from attacks that could destabilize the capital.

The Somali Police Force reiterated that it would pursue legal action against anyone found responsible for acts that threaten public safety, stressing that attacks against security institutions and civilian communities would not deter efforts to maintain law and order.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
