Somali, Turkish Military Officials Pledge Closer Cooperation on Army Training and Logistics
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Senior Somali and Turkish military officials have agreed to strengthen cooperation on military training and logistical support for the Somali National Army (SNA), following talks in Mogadishu aimed at enhancing the force’s operational capabilities.
The commitment was reached during a meeting between Brigadier General Mohamed Mahmoud Hussein (Garabey), commander of the Somali National Army’s Logistics Command, and Major General Sabahattin Kalkan, commander of the TURKSOM Military Training School.
According to military officials, the discussions focused on expanding collaboration between the two institutions, with particular emphasis on improving training standards, strengthening logistical support systems and enhancing the readiness of Somali troops.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation as Somalia continues efforts to build a more capable and self-reliant national army.
Kalkan also congratulated Garabey on his recent appointment as head of the Logistics Command, expressing confidence in his leadership and the command’s role in supporting the development of Somalia’s armed forces.
Turkey has emerged as one of Somalia’s key security partners over the past decade, providing military training, equipment and institutional support through the TURKSOM Military Training Centre in Mogadishu. The facility has trained thousands of Somali soldiers and officers, contributing to broader efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions.
The renewed cooperation comes as Somali forces intensify operations against Al-Shabaab and seek to improve their ability to independently manage security responsibilities as international peacekeeping missions continue to draw down.
