Somalia, Azerbaijan Seek Stronger Ties through Education and Diplomacy
GOOBJOOG NEWS | BAKU: Somalia is seeking to expand educational opportunities for its citizens and strengthen diplomatic cooperation with Azerbaijan, as its embassy in Baku works to turn growing bilateral ties into practical benefits.
Somali Ambassador to Azerbaijan Abdinur Dahir Fidow said the embassy was working to strengthen relations between the two countries, including efforts to secure scholarship opportunities for Somali students at Azerbaijani universities.
Fidow briefed Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud, on the embassy’s diplomatic activities during the minister’s visit to the Somali mission in Baku.
Somalia is seeking to broaden access to international education and build partnerships that can support skills development, particularly among young people facing limited opportunities at home.
Azerbaijan has developed education and cultural cooperation programmes with international partners, offering a potential avenue for Somali students to access higher education and specialised training abroad.
Fidow is Somalia’s first resident ambassador to Azerbaijan, establishing a permanent diplomatic presence that provides a channel for closer engagement on education, culture and other areas of mutual interest.
During the visit, Mahmoud toured the embassy’s offices and viewed displays showcasing Somalia’s history, heritage and national identity. He praised the ambassador’s work in representing the country and advancing its diplomatic interests.
The minister is in Baku to attend the seventh World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, an international gathering focused on cultural understanding, peaceful coexistence and cooperation.
Somalia has been seeking to strengthen its international partnerships beyond its immediate neighbourhood, with diplomatic missions playing a role in promoting educational exchanges, cultural links and economic cooperation.
