Somalia Boosts Cooperation on Justice Reform and Detainee Rights
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s human rights watchdog and the justice ministry have moved to deepen cooperation aimed at improving prison conditions and strengthening protections for vulnerable groups in the legal system.
Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Somalia, Dr Maryam Qasim Ahmed, held talks with Justice Minister Hassan Moallim Mohamud in Mogadishu, focusing on advancing joint efforts to promote human rights.
Officials said discussions centred on the treatment of detainees, safeguards for prisoners’ rights, and reforms to better support children and other at-risk groups interacting with the justice system.
Both sides agreed to step up coordination between state institutions to ensure legal processes meet national and international human rights standards, while also committing to expand prison oversight and joint reform initiatives.
The engagement reflects growing efforts by the federal government of Somalia to modernise the justice sector and reinforce accountability as part of wider institutional reforms.
