Somalia Calls for Urgent Action on Water Security amid Climate Pressures
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: Somalia has called for increased global action to address water scarcity, warning that climate change is worsening access to clean water across vulnerable communities.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Bashiir Mohamed Jama told a regional sustainable development forum that rising climate shocks, combined with rapid urbanisation and limited investment, are putting growing strain on water resources.
Speaking during a session focused on water security, he said access to clean water remains central to communities’ ability to adapt to climate change and sustain livelihoods.
Jama urged stronger international cooperation and increased funding to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure universal access to safe water.
The Horn of Africa has faced repeated droughts in recent years, with Somalia among the countries hardest hit, highlighting the urgency of long-term solutions to improve water resilience.
