Somalia Condemns Deadly Damascus Bombing, Reaffirms Support for Syria
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has condemned the deadly bombing in Syria’s capital, Damascus, expressing solidarity with the Syrian government and people following one of the deadliest attacks to hit the capital in recent months.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation denounced what it described as a terrorist attack, which claimed several lives and left others injured.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to those wounded.
“Somalia stands in full solidarity with the government and people of the Syrian Arab Republic during this difficult time,” the ministry said, reaffirming its support for efforts to strengthen security, stability and the protection of civilians.
The statement comes after a bomb exploded at a crowded café near Damascus’ Palace of Justice, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 20 others, according to Syrian authorities. No group has claimed responsibility, but officials say preliminary investigations point to a crude improvised explosive device and suspect extremist groups are seeking to destabilise the country.
The attack underscores the fragile security situation in Syria as the country’s new leadership continues efforts to restore stability following the 2024 overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad. Although large-scale fighting has largely subsided, Damascus has witnessed several deadly attacks over the past year, with authorities warning that Islamic State sleeper cells remain capable of carrying out high-profile bombings.
Somalia has consistently condemned attacks against civilians and reaffirmed its support for international efforts to combat terrorism, as it continues its own campaign against Al-Shabaab insurgency at home.
