Somalia Conveys Condolences to Algeria After Bus Crash Kills At Least 25
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has expressed condolences to Algeria following a bus crash near the city of Boumerdes that killed at least 25 people and injured dozens, joining other countries in mourning one of the North African nation’s deadliest recent road accidents.
In a statement, Somalia’s federal government extended its sympathies to the Algerian government and the families of those killed, saying it stood in solidarity with the North African country as it responds to the tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and the communities affected by this devastating incident,” the statement said. Somalia also wished those injured a speedy recovery and acknowledged the efforts of emergency responders and authorities involved in rescue and medical operations.
The government said it reaffirmed its solidarity with Algeria during what it described as a difficult period, while expressing hope that the country would overcome the tragedy with resilience and unity.
The accident occurred near Boumerdes, east of the Algerian capital, Algiers, on Friday. Algerian authorities said at least 25 people were killed and dozens more were injured after a passenger bus crashed, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Road accidents remain a significant public safety challenge across parts of North Africa and the wider African continent, where authorities continue to grapple with factors including aging transport infrastructure, vehicle safety standards and traffic law enforcement. Deadly bus crashes have periodically prompted calls for tighter road safety measures and improved public transport oversight.
Somalia and Algeria maintain longstanding diplomatic ties through the African Union, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, with the two countries frequently exchanging messages of solidarity following natural disasters, security incidents and other national tragedies.
