Somalia Expresses Regret after Athlete Denied Entry to Tournament
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has said that Somali athlete Omar Artan was unable to participate in an international athletics competition after being denied entry to the host country despite efforts by Somali authorities and sports officials to resolve the issue.
In a statement, the ministry said Artan had been scheduled to represent Somalia at a global athletics event hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico but was prevented from travelling after encountering visa-related obstacles.
The ministry said it worked alongside Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomatic missions and international sports bodies, including FIFA, to seek a solution, but those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
“We deeply regret the circumstances that prevented the athlete from participating in this global competition,” the ministry said.
Artan has emerged as one of Somalia’s most promising athletes in recent years, earning recognition for performances that have raised the country’s profile in international sport.
The ministry praised the athlete’s determination and resilience, describing his achievements as a source of pride for Somalis both at home and abroad.
The case highlights a challenge frequently faced by athletes from developing countries, where visa delays and travel restrictions have occasionally disrupted participation in international sporting events despite qualification or official invitations.
The issue has drawn attention within Somalia’s sporting community, where officials and supporters expressed disappointment that an athlete selected to represent the country was unable to compete.
The ministry reaffirmed its support for Artan and said it would continue working to ensure Somali athletes have greater access to international competitions in the future.
Somalia has sought to expand its presence in international sport in recent years despite limited resources and the challenges posed by decades of conflict and underinvestment in sports infrastructure.
Participation in major global events remains important for inspiring young athletes and strengthening the country’s sporting development.
