GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has welcomed a recent memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive step toward easing tensions and promoting stability in a region critical to global trade and security.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Federal Government of Somalia commended Washington and Tehran for pursuing dialogue and diplomacy, expressing hope that the agreement would help reduce the risk of further conflict and contribute to long-term peace efforts. The agreement, known as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” was reached with mediation support from Pakistan and Qatar and aims to lay the groundwork for a broader settlement between the two countries.

Somalia also praised the diplomatic contributions of Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, saying their efforts had helped create conditions for constructive engagement between the two sides. Those countries have publicly welcomed the agreement and supported ongoing negotiations aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The Somali government further acknowledged the role played by U.S. President Donald J. Trump in advancing efforts toward a negotiated settlement.

“Somalia hopes the understanding will be implemented in good faith and contribute to protecting civilian lives, safeguarding freedom of navigation and preventing further escalation,” the statement said.

The memorandum follows months of heightened tensions involving the United States and Iran and includes provisions aimed at reducing hostilities, reopening maritime routes and establishing a framework for further negotiations. The agreement has also led to steps toward restoring commercial shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.

For Somalia, developments in the Middle East and Red Sea region carry particular significance given the country’s location along key international shipping lanes linking the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Any disruption to maritime security can have broader implications for trade, energy markets and regional stability across the Horn of Africa.

The Federal Government reiterated its support for diplomacy, respect for international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while welcoming efforts that contribute to peace and security in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.

The U.S. and Iran are expected to continue technical negotiations in the coming weeks as both sides work toward a more comprehensive agreement.
