GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia on Friday marked the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the Somali Youth League, the country’s earliest nationalist movement widely credited with spearheading the push toward independence from colonial rule.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led commemorations in the capital Mogadishu, laying flowers at the Somali Youth League monument in honor of the movement’s founders and members.

The Somali Youth League, originally established as the Somali Youth Club before evolving into a political party, became a key force in mobilising nationalist sentiment across Somali-inhabited territories during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and is widely regarded as central to Somalia’s independence movement.

Federal government officials said the anniversary was intended to honour the country’s founding generation and reinforce national unity amid ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions, improve governance and promote reconciliation.

The commemoration comes as Somalia continues broader state-building efforts alongside security operations against insurgents and periodic political tensions over institutional reforms and electoral processes.

Analysts say such national events are increasingly used by the federal administration to reinforce civic identity and engage a youthful population, the majority of whom were born long after independence.

The Somali Youth League remains a defining symbol of Somali nationalism and political organisation, with its legacy frequently invoked in contemporary debates over unity and governance.
