Somalia Names National Women’s Council to Strengthen Female Representation
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development has appointed a new National Women’s Council, in a move aimed at strengthening women’s participation in politics, governance and national development.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, who said the council would serve as a national platform for advancing women’s rights and increasing their role in decision-making processes.
The 10-member body will be led by Naciimo Ibrahim Yusuf as chairperson, assisted by deputy chairperson Faa’iza Ali Boolaay. The remaining members come from a range of professional backgrounds and are expected to advise the government on issues affecting women across the country.
According to the ministry, the council will work to promote women’s inclusion in political, social and economic life while supporting efforts to protect and advance their rights. It will also provide recommendations on policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of Somali women.
The ministry said the council’s establishment is based on legal provisions that recognise the importance of women’s participation in public affairs and national development.
The move comes as Somalia continues efforts to increase women’s representation in public institutions. Despite progress in recent years, including a larger presence of women in parliament and government, campaigners say significant challenges remain in achieving equal participation in leadership and decision-making roles.
Ministry officials expressed hope that the new council will help amplify women’s voices and contribute to broader efforts to promote inclusion and equality in Somalia’s political and social landscape.
