GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal government of Somalia has underscored the importance of closer cooperation with independent media organizations, with Information Minister Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud describing private media as a key partner in public awareness, peacebuilding and national development.

Speaking during talks with executives and directors of independent media outlets in Mogadishu, the minister said the government viewed privately owned media organizations as an essential pillar in delivering accurate information, promoting social cohesion and supporting Somalia’s state-building efforts.

The meeting formed part of a broader government initiative to engage stakeholders in the media sector and gather views on improving cooperation between the Ministry of Information and independent journalists and broadcasters.

According to the ministry, discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in public communication, media development and civic awareness campaigns, particularly on issues linked to security, stability and national unity.

Media executives attending the talks also raised concerns about challenges facing the industry, including operational pressures, professional capacity and the need for a more supportive environment for independent journalism.

The federal government has increasingly relied on local media outlets to support public messaging on counterterrorism operations, reconciliation efforts and constitutional reforms as Somalia continues to navigate political and security challenges.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain consultations and reinforce cooperation aimed at strengthening Somalia’s media sector and expanding its role in informing the public.
