GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Qatar have moved to strengthen cooperation on human rights and institutional development, as part of broader efforts to align Somalia’s systems with international standards.

The head of the National Human Rights Commission Somalia, Dr Maryam Qasim, held talks with Qatar’s ambassador to Somalia, Abdulla bin Salim Al Nuaimi, focusing on expanding collaboration between the two countries’ human rights institutions.

The discussions outlined a more structured partnership centred on technical cooperation, capacity building and the exchange of expertise, alongside improving human rights reporting and oversight mechanisms.

Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening monitoring of detention facilities and enhancing institutional performance, areas seen as critical to ongoing justice sector reforms in Somalia.

Officials said the engagement signals a shift towards more practical, results-driven cooperation, with both sides aiming to reinforce national systems and promote accountability in line with global human rights frameworks.

The meeting builds on Qatar’s continued diplomatic and institutional support to Somalia, including its backing at the United Nations Human Rights Council, as Mogadishu works to consolidate reforms and improve protections for vulnerable groups.
