GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s human rights commission and the International Committee of the Red Cross have stepped up cooperation on civilian protection and detention oversight, as climate shocks continue to strain the country.

Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Somalia, Dr Maryam Qasim, met Antoine Grand in Mogadishu for talks focused on safeguarding detainees’ rights, monitoring prisons and reinforcing respect for international humanitarian law.

The meeting comes as Somalia intensifies military operations against Al-Shabaab, heightening concerns over civilian protection and the treatment of detainees.

At the same time, repeated droughts and displacement have deepened humanitarian needs, increasing pressure on authorities and aid agencies to improve access and coordination.

Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration on humanitarian delivery, expand support to vulnerable communities and reinforce national systems to better protect human rights.

The talks highlight a growing push by the federal government of Somalia to align with international standards while responding to mounting humanitarian and security challenges.
