GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has launched a new phase of a nationwide programme aimed at increasing women’s role in peace building and governance, as the country pushes to strengthen inclusion in post-conflict recovery.

Family and Human Rights Development Minister Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi announced the second phase of the Women’s Peace and Protection Joint Programme (WPP-II), a two-year initiative backed by the United Nations.

The programme will focus on expanding women’s participation in leadership and decision-making, while supporting legal and policy frameworks designed to improve protection and inclusion.

It will be implemented by UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with technical support from the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia, building on progress made in its initial phase.

Officials said the initiative aims to reach tens of thousands of people nationwide, targeting vulnerable groups including internally displaced communities, minority groups and women with disabilities.

Somalia has been working to integrate gender inclusion into its broader peace building agenda, with authorities and international partners emphasizing the role of women in stabilization, governance and long-term development.
