GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Speaker of the House of the People, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur has congratulated Saudi lawmaker Saad bin Sulaib Al-Otaibi on his election as president of the Arab Parliament, expressing hope for stronger parliamentary cooperation between Somalia and other Arab countries.

In a message, Jaamac wished Al-Otaibi success in carrying out his new responsibilities and welcomed efforts to strengthen relations between Somalia’s House of the People and the Arab Parliament.

He said closer cooperation between the two institutions would help advance shared interests and reinforce the longstanding ties between Somalia and the wider Arab world.

Al-Otaibi was elected unopposed during a session at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, succeeding Emirati lawmaker Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi. He is a member of Saudi Arabia’s Shura Council and previously served as the Arab Parliament’s first deputy president.

The Arab Parliament is an institution of the League of Arab States that brings together representatives from the national legislatures of its 22 member countries. It provides a platform for lawmakers to discuss regional issues, coordinate positions and promote cooperation on matters of common interest.

Somalia is among the parliament’s member states, giving its lawmakers an avenue to engage with counterparts across the Arab world on political, economic and security issues.

Al-Otaibi has said his priorities include strengthening joint Arab parliamentary action and increasing the institution’s role in regional and international forums. He has also reaffirmed that the Palestinian cause will remain a central focus of its work.
