GOOBJOOG NEWS | GENEVA: Somalia and the United Kingdom have agreed to strengthen cooperation on human rights and institutional reform following high-level talks in Geneva, as Mogadishu seeks greater international backing for its reform agenda.

Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, met the UK’s Ambassador for Human Rights, Eleanor Sanders, during discussions focused on expanding collaboration in human rights protection and governance.

British officials welcomed what they described as Somalia’s recent progress in strengthening human rights institutions, including the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission Somalia.

The meeting also highlighted a newly signed agreement between Somalia and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights aimed at aligning the country’s human rights systems more closely with international standards.

Minister Al-Makhzoumi said continued cooperation with international partners was important for sustaining Somalia’s broader state-building and reform efforts.

Both sides reaffirmed commitments to deepen engagement on institutional development, human rights protections and long-term support for ongoing reforms.

The talks come as Somalia increases diplomatic outreach on governance and human rights issues, while working to strengthen oversight institutions after decades of conflict and political instability.
