GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s national human rights commission and the United Nations have agreed to deepen cooperation on human rights monitoring, institutional reform and public accountability systems.

The agreement was reached during talks in Mogadishu between the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Somalia, Dr Maryam Qasim, and George Conway, the UN Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia.

The two sides agreed to expand technical and institutional support for the commission, including assistance in governance systems, complaint management and public awareness initiatives.

The discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation in monitoring human rights conditions and improving protection mechanisms for vulnerable groups.

The meeting reflects growing efforts by the federal government of Somalia to reinforce oversight institutions and improve accountability as the country rebuilds state structures after decades of conflict and instability.

In recent months, the commission has intensified engagement with international partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and regional human rights bodies, as Somalia seeks to align its institutions more closely with international human rights standards.
