GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation has welcomed a partnership agreement between the Somali National University and the University of Rwanda, describing it as a step toward strengthening peacebuilding, reconciliation and institutional development through African-led cooperation.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed in Kigali, establishes a long-term academic partnership focused on peace education, reconciliation studies, curriculum development, research collaboration and institutional capacity-building, the ministry said in a statement.

The agreement forms part of broader efforts by Somalia to promote national reconciliation and social cohesion following decades of conflict and political instability.

According to the ministry, the partnership aligns with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (2025–2029), National Reconciliation Framework and Centennial Vision 2060, as well as continental initiatives including the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and regional higher education cooperation frameworks.

The collaboration reflects a growing emphasis on African-led solutions to challenges facing the continent, including peacebuilding, governance, education and sustainable development.

“The initiative demonstrates the value of regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing in addressing common challenges and strengthening institutions,” the ministry said.

Rwanda has frequently been cited by African policymakers as a model for post-conflict recovery and institutional rebuilding following the 1994 genocide, while Somalia continues efforts to strengthen governance structures and advance reconciliation initiatives amid ongoing security and political challenges.

The ministry said the partnership would support academic exchanges, joint research and capacity-building programs aimed at contributing to long-term stability and development in Somalia and the wider East African region.

The agreement was supported by Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, the National Commission for Higher Education, Rwanda Cooperation, the Somali National University and the University of Rwanda.

The deal comes as Somalia seeks to expand regional partnerships and leverage higher education as part of broader efforts to strengthen state institutions, promote social cohesion and support post-conflict recovery.
