GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Political parties in Somalia’s South West State have agreed to form a broad alliance backing the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) ahead of the region’s upcoming presidential election, in what officials describe as a major step forward for Somalia’s expanding democratic process.

The agreement was reached during high-level talks in Baidoa led by the Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, who met representatives from several political organizations that recently participated in South West State’s one-person, one-vote elections.

The meeting brought together delegates from Towfiiq, TIIR, Waaberi, SINCAD and National Vision political organizations as discussions focused on strengthening political cooperation and consolidating support for the next phase of the regional electoral process.

Officials said the participating groups agreed to jointly support the presidential candidate of the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) in the forthcoming South West State presidential election.

The alliance is expected to further strengthen political stability in South West State following the successful completion of recent direct elections, which federal authorities have described as an important milestone in Somalia’s broader democratic transition.

For the federal government, the agreement is likely to be seen as evidence of growing acceptance of direct elections and multiparty politics as Somalia moves away from decades of indirect clan-based voting systems.

The talks in Baidoa also highlighted increasing political coordination between regional stakeholders and federal institutions as Somalia pushes ahead with constitutional reforms and plans for wider electoral participation across the country.

Speaking after the meeting, SINCAD spokesperson Abdifitah Hassan Afrah said the alliance brought together most political organizations that participated in the recent elections, signaling what supporters called a united effort to advance political stability and democratic governance in South West State.

South West State has become one of the key testing grounds for Somalia’s electoral reform agenda and remains strategically important because of its political influence and role in ongoing operations against al-Shabab in southern Somalia.
