South West State Speaker Election Set for June 2
GOOBJOOG NEWS | BAIDOA: The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has announced that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the South West State Parliament will be held on June 2, following the completion of the regional parliamentary elections.
According to the schedule released by the commission, candidates seeking the positions will first undergo registration before the official list of contestants is unveiled ahead of the vote.
The speaker election comes days after NIEBC confirmed the election of 92 Members of Parliament to the South West State assembly, paving the way for the formation of the region’s new parliamentary leadership.
The race for the Speaker’s seat is expected to attract intense political interest, as the position plays a central role in overseeing parliamentary proceedings and influencing the direction of the regional administration.
Political observers say the outcome of the leadership vote could also shape alliances ahead of the South West presidential election scheduled later in June.
The commission has stated that the electoral activities are being conducted under the approved electoral framework guiding the broader state formation and leadership transition process in South West State.
