Somalia appeals for more aid to curb food insecurity
GOOBJOOG NEWS | WASHINGTON: The President’s special envoy in Charge of drought Emergency Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame has challenged the global community to support Somalia’s efforts to find a lasting solution to food insecurity in Somalia.
In a meeting at the sidelines of the ongoing spring meeting organized by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund the special envoy shared with the global community the challenges facing Somalia – particularly food shortage and overdependence on foreign aid.
He noted that Somalia has numerous natural resources and is strategically positioned near the Indian Ocean – a key global transit route saying these can be tapped to create opportunities and better the livelihoods of the Somali people.
Mr. Warsame further told the meeting which was attended by the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the head of the World Bank, the Ministers of International Development of the United Kingdom, Denmark, and other officials that Somalia is a country of geopolitical importance and has an ambitious youthful population with dynamic creative skills which need to be tapped into.
He noted that the global community should stand with Somalia by funding development projects that will build community resilience and help them recover from the effects of war and drought.
The spring meeting which is ongoing in Washington DC was convened to discuss various global issues such as poverty eradication, economic development, the effectiveness of aid, and the global financial system.
