Supreme Court Ratifies South West State Election Results
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Supreme Court has formally ratified the final results of local council and legislative elections in South West State after concluding a judicial review process involving the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC).
The ruling, issued by the Supreme Court’s electoral chamber on May 25, approved the election outcomes for the South West State House of Representatives and local district councils following submissions by the electoral commission and a review of the legal procedures surrounding the vote.
Court documents show the case was reviewed by a five-member judicial panel led by Chief Justice Abdullahi Sheikh Omar Mohamed, with hearings examining reports and documentation submitted by the electoral commission regarding the conduct and certification of the elections.
The court said the electoral process complied with constitutional and legal requirements, effectively giving final judicial approval to the election results and paving the way for newly elected representatives and council members to formally assume office.
The ratification marks one of the most significant judicial endorsements of Somalia’s evolving federal electoral system as authorities push ahead with broader democratic reforms and decentralized governance structures.
Federal government officials have presented the South West State electoral process as part of wider efforts to institutionalize one-person, one-vote democratic systems and strengthen constitutional governance after decades of political instability and indirect clan-based voting systems.
Political observers say the court’s decision could serve as a legal and procedural benchmark for future regional elections in other Federal Member States, particularly as Somalia seeks to expand electoral participation and reinforce the role of national institutions in overseeing democratic processes.
The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has increasingly taken a central role in organizing and validating elections under Somalia’s federal framework, with authorities describing the South West State vote as a test case for future nationwide electoral reforms.
