GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Armed forces linked to former South Weststate leader Abdiaziz Laftagareen have moved to the outskirts of Luuq town in Somalia’s Gedo region, raising tensions amid divisions between federal and regional authorities.

The forces travelling in about 15 military vehicles, had been stationed in Awdiinle in recent days before withdrawing after coming under attack from federal government troops, according to local sources.

Their arrival near Luuq, a strategic transit town, has sparked disagreement over whether they should be allowed to enter, with officials from the federal government and Jubbaland administration reportedly split on the issue.

Some officials favour blocking the forces from entering the town, citing security concerns, while others view their movement as strategically important.

The dispute has heightened concerns over stability in Gedo, a region that has seen recurring political and military tensions between rival authorities.

Sources said the situation remains tense, with a decision expected from officials in the coming hours or days on how to handle the forces’ presence near the town.
