Turkey Donates Equipment to Support Somalia’s Agriculture Ministry
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU:Somalia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has received a consignment of modern equipment from Turkey’s Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), in a move aimed at strengthening the ministry’s operational capacity and supporting the country’s agricultural development goals.
Agriculture Minister Mohamed A. Hayir Maareeye officially received the equipment during a handover ceremony, describing the support as an important contribution to efforts to modernize the ministry and improve service delivery.
According to the ministry, the new equipment is expected to enhance institutional efficiency and support the implementation of agricultural development programs designed to increase productivity and strengthen food security.
Somalia has identified agriculture as a key pillar of its economic recovery and development strategy. The sector employs a large share of the population and remains critical to livelihoods, particularly in rural communities, despite challenges posed by climate change, recurrent droughts and limited infrastructure.
Ministry officials said the support would contribute to Somalia’s broader objective of achieving greater food self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imported food products.
The handover also highlights growing cooperation between Somalia and Turkey, which has become one of Somalia’s closest development partners over the past decade, supporting projects in infrastructure, education, health, security and humanitarian assistance.
The Ministry of Agriculture thanked the Government of Turkey and TİKA for their continued support, describing the partnership as an important contribution to Somalia’s long-term development efforts.
