GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The United States has expressed concern over escalating violence and political tensions in Mogadishu, urging Somali leaders to resolve disputes peacefully and safeguard the country’s stability.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Somalia said the ongoing unrest posed risks to the country’s security, unity and future, calling on all political actors to act responsibly.

“Somali leaders on all sides have a responsibility to maintain stability and resolve their differences peacefully,” the embassy said.

The United States warned that decisions taken in the coming hours and days could have long-term consequences for Somalia, which is navigating a critical period marked by political disagreements and ongoing security challenges.

The statement came after a night of heavy fighting in parts of Mogadishu, where residents reported sustained gunfire and explosions in several districts. The clashes followed days of rising tensions between the federal government and opposition leaders over constitutional reforms, electoral arrangements and the country’s political direction.

The violence also coincided with preparations for opposition demonstrations that authorities had approved under strict security conditions. Government officials and opposition figures have since traded accusations over the causes of the unrest, while details of the clashes remain disputed.

The United States is among Somalia’s key international partners and has long supported efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions, democratic processes and state-building initiatives.

Washington has repeatedly encouraged Somali leaders to resolve political disagreements through dialogue, warning that internal divisions could undermine gains made against insurgent groups and delay political reforms.

The latest tensions come as Somalia continues military operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which remains a major security threat despite recent offensives by Somali forces and allied local militias. Analysts have warned that prolonged political instability could distract from counterinsurgency efforts and create opportunities for militant groups to exploit divisions among political actors.

While the full circumstances surrounding the recent clashes remain unclear, diplomatic missions and international partners have increasingly voiced concern that escalating political tensions could threaten stability in the capital and complicate Somalia’s broader efforts to strengthen governance and security.

The U.S. embassy did not attribute blame for the violence but stressed the need for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
