UK Joins International Calls for Peaceful Resolution to Somalia Tensions
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Britain on Thursday expressed concern over reports of violence in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu and urged all sides to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue, as political tensions in the country showed signs of escalating.
In a statement, the British Embassy in Somalia said the clashes reported overnight were unacceptable and called on political leaders and security actors to avoid actions that could further inflame the situation.
“We call on all sides to exercise restraint and engage in inclusive and meaningful dialogue to resolve tensions peacefully,” the embassy said.
The statement followed a night of heavy gunfire and explosions in parts of Mogadishu, where residents reported clashes that disrupted normal life and raised concerns about security in the capital. The circumstances surrounding the fighting remain contested, and authorities have yet to provide a comprehensive account of the events.
Britain’s comments come amid a deepening political dispute between Somalia’s federal government and opposition leaders over constitutional reforms, electoral arrangements and broader questions about the country’s political direction.
The tensions have intensified in recent days as opposition groups prepared demonstrations in Mogadishu, prompting heightened security deployments across parts of the city. Government officials and opposition figures have since traded accusations over the causes of the unrest.
The United Kingdom joined a growing number of international partners voicing concern over the situation. Earlier, the United States urged Somali leaders to prioritize dialogue and stability, warning that decisions taken in the coming days could have lasting implications for the country’s security, unity and democratic development.
Diplomats have increasingly cautioned that prolonged political tensions risk undermining Somalia’s efforts to strengthen state institutions at a time when government forces remain engaged in military operations against the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab.
Britain has been a longstanding supporter of Somalia’s reconstruction efforts, providing assistance in areas including security, governance and humanitarian relief. British officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of political consensus in preserving gains made after decades of conflict and instability.
The embassy did not attribute responsibility for the latest violence but said all parties should work to reduce tensions and pursue a peaceful resolution to their differences.
