GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Ukraine has congratulated Somalia on the 66th anniversary of its Independence and Unity Day, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the Horn of Africa nation in areas including food security and state-building.

In a statement marking Somalia’s July 1 national celebrations, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry wished the Somali people peace, prosperity and continued progress, while pledging to deepen cooperation with Mogadishu.

Kyiv said it would continue supporting Somalia’s efforts to strengthen food security and build resilient state institutions, describing the partnership as part of its broader engagement with African countries.

The ministry also praised Somalia’s support for the principles of international law, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states, saying the two countries share a commitment to upholding those values.

The message comes as Somalia marks 66 years since the union of the former British Somaliland protectorate and the UN-administered Trust Territory of Somalia in 1960, an event that established the Somali Republic.

It also comes amid Somalia’s renewed diplomatic engagement with international partners and its continued efforts to strengthen security, implement political reforms and attract investment as it rebuilds after decades of conflict.

Ukraine has in recent years expanded its diplomatic outreach across Africa while seeking support for its position following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Somalia has consistently affirmed its support for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in international forums, while maintaining diplomatic relations with both Ukraine and several of its international partners.
