UN Security Council strongly condemns terrorist attack on El-Baraf

GOOBJOOG NEWS|NEW YORK: Members of the Security Council strongly condemn Al-Shabaab’s heinous attack on the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base in El Baraf, Middle Shabelle region, on March 3rd.

They members paid tribute to the Burundian National Defense Forces for their contribution to the peace and stability of Somalia, extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the government and the people of the Republic of Burundi, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

UN Security Council members expressed their full support for the Somali Federal Government and ATMIS efforts to counter the threat posed by the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group, Al-Shabaab. The members also highlighted the need to hold all those behind acts of terrorism in the Horn of Africa Nation responsible and bring them to justice.

They underlined the importance of maintaining the gains made so far in Somalia and improving the quality of support for the Somali Security Forces and ATMIS.

Members of the Security Council urged all State Governments, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to work actively with the Federal Government of Somalia and all other relevant institutions. They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

Finally, members of the Security Council reaffirmed their commitment to the political, territorial integrity and unity of Somalia.
