US Reaffirms Support for Somalia in Independence Day Message
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The United States has congratulated Somalia on the 66th anniversary of its Independence and Unity Day, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s security, counterterrorism and state-building efforts.
In a message marking Somalia’s national day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations to the Somali government and its people, saying Washington shared in the celebrations.
“On behalf of the United States, I extend my congratulations to the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia on the 66th anniversary of your National Day,” Rubio said.
He said the United States remained committed to working alongside Somalia in its fight against terrorism and corruption, while supporting efforts to build a more secure and prosperous future.
“The United States stands with the Somali people in their struggle against terrorism and corruption and in their efforts to build a more prosperous future,” the statement said.
Rubio also expressed hope that the two countries would continue strengthening cooperation over the coming year in support of peace, stability and their longstanding bilateral partnership.
The message comes as Somalia continues military operations against Al-Shabaab while pursuing political reforms and expanding diplomatic engagement with regional and international partners.
In recent weeks, Washington has reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s security institutions and efforts to stabilise the country, even as both governments continue cooperating on counterterrorism and regional security in the Horn of Africa.
The United States has been one of Somalia’s principal international partners for more than three decades, providing support in areas including humanitarian assistance, security sector reform, development and counterterrorism.
US forces have also continued to support Somali security forces through training, intelligence sharing and targeted operations against Al-Shabaab in coordination with the federal government.
