World Press Freedom Day: Somalia Journalists Convene For Training On Ethical Election Reporting
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: As Somalia marks World Press Freedom Day, more than 35 journalists from 21 media outlets in Mogadishu have gathered for a two-day workshop aimed at strengthening ethical reporting and countering hate speech during the electoral period.
The training, which opened today, comes at a critical moment as the country approaches a sensitive political transition, underscoring the media’s responsibility to provide accurate, balanced, and conflict-sensitive coverage.
Participants are taking part in sessions designed to enhance their ability to identify and prevent misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech—key risks to public trust and social cohesion, particularly during elections. The programme also covers practical tools for fact-checking, safeguarding information integrity, and reporting within the framework of Somalia’s electoral system.
Supported by the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia, the workshop highlights the role of journalism not only as a source of information, but as a stabilizing force in fragile political environments. Discussions are focusing on how journalists can avoid amplifying divisive narratives while ensuring fair and inclusive coverage of all political actors.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by Somali authorities and international partners to strengthen media professionalism and uphold press freedom standards, particularly at a time when credible information is essential to peaceful and transparent elections.
