Halimo Yarey: Somali Electoral commission is mandated to hold countrywide elections in 2020.

The head of Somali Independent Electoral Commission Halima Ibrahim Ismail ( Halimo Yarey) says there is an obvious difference between the recent  federal electoral commission appointed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud and the commission she chairs.

She said that the Independent Electoral Commission is tasked to prepare the country for embracing general election that every Somali citizen can vote in 2020 while Federal level commission is tasked to govern this year’s elections.

“There is a big difference between the two commissions. The federal level electoral commission is the product of the national consultative forum, and it tasked to govern this year’s elections, whereas Independent electoral commission is tasked to prepare the country for universal suffrage elections in 2020” said Halimo Yarey.

She also underlined the fact that Somali Federal parliament has tasked Independent electoral commission to prepare the country for the general election while federal level electoral commission came through presidential decree.
