Somalia, Algeria Seek Closer Media and Cultural Ties
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Algeria are seeking to expand cooperation in broadcasting, cultural preservation and the arts, as the two countries look to build on their longstanding diplomatic relations through closer ties between their media and cultural institutions.
The proposed cooperation would focus on strengthening national broadcasters, exchanging professional expertise and supporting cultural activities that promote the artistic and historical heritage of both countries.
The discussions took place in Mogadishu on Monday between Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud, and Algeria’s ambassador to Somalia, Mohamed Alim, according to the Somali Information Ministry.
The two officials explored opportunities for collaboration between media institutions, including professional training, knowledge-sharing and the modernisation of state-owned broadcasting services.
For Somalia, where national media institutions have been rebuilding their operations after decades of conflict and political instability, international partnerships could offer opportunities to improve technical capacity, develop professional skills and strengthen public broadcasting.
Cultural cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides highlighting the importance of preserving traditional arts, literature and historical heritage while encouraging greater exchanges between Somali and Algerian cultural institutions.
Following the talks, the minister and ambassador toured several of Somalia’s national media institutions, including the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), Somali National Television (SNTV), Radio Mogadishu and the radio station’s historical archives.
The visit also took them to the Somali National Theatre, where members of the Waaberi National Artists and traditional performance groups presented displays of Somali music, dance and cultural heritage.
Ambassador Alim reaffirmed Algeria’s interest in strengthening relations with Somalia, particularly through cooperation in information, culture, arts and literature.
Mohamud said closer collaboration could help develop Somalia’s national media, preserve its cultural heritage and create opportunities for professional and artistic exchanges between the two countries.
The discussions reflect efforts by Somalia and Algeria to broaden their bilateral relationship beyond traditional diplomatic engagement, although no specific agreements, funding commitments or implementation timelines were announced.
