GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia will highlight its cultural heritage and history at an international forum in Azerbaijan this week, as the government seeks to promote the country’s identity and strengthen cultural ties with the wider world.

Information, Culture and Tourism Minister Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud travelled to Baku on Sunday to attend the seventh World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, where government officials, diplomats, academics and media representatives are gathering to discuss ways to promote peaceful coexistence and understanding among different cultures.

Mahmoud is expected to address the forum on Somalia’s cultural traditions, historical legacy and social values, highlighting their potential contribution to international efforts to foster mutual respect and peaceful relations between communities.

Somalia’s participation comes as the government seeks to broaden the country’s international engagement beyond political and security issues, including through cultural diplomacy and efforts to promote its heritage.

The forum provides a platform for countries and international organisations to exchange ideas on intercultural cooperation, dialogue and the role of cultural understanding in preventing divisions and promoting peace.

Somalia’s history has been shaped by centuries of trade and cultural exchange across the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean, creating traditions that connect the country to communities across the region and beyond.

The minister’s visit also offers an opportunity to raise Somalia’s cultural profile internationally, although authorities have not announced details of any bilateral meetings or other engagements planned during the forum.
