Somalia’s Parliamentary Leaders Seek Closer Coordination on Key Laws and 2025 Budget Accounts
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s two parliamentary chambers are seeking closer coordination on key legislation and scrutiny of public spending, with lawmakers preparing to examine the federal government’s 2025 budget accounts.
The discussions bring renewed focus to parliament’s legislative and oversight responsibilities as Somalia works to strengthen governance and ensure public finances are handled in line with constitutional and legal requirements.
Speaker of the House of the People Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur met Senate Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi at the Upper House headquarters in Mogadishu on Sunday to discuss cooperation between the two chambers.
The leaders emphasised the need to accelerate work on bills considered important to national interests and the Somali public, according to a statement from parliament.
They also discussed preparations for debate on the 2025 financial-year accounts, a process that allows lawmakers to scrutinise government expenditure and assess whether public funds have been managed in accordance with the law.
The review is part of parliament’s broader oversight role, particularly in examining the use of public resources and holding government institutions accountable for their financial decisions.
The meeting was attended by the Senate’s second deputy speaker, the Senate usher and the secretary-general of the House of the People.
The talks underscore the importance of coordination between Somalia’s bicameral parliament as it advances legislation and prepares to review the government’s financial performance.
