Somalia Unveils New Design for National Passport

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has unveiled a redesigned national passport featuring new ordinary, service and diplomatic travel documents, in a move the federal government says reflects the country’s identity and cultural heritage.

The Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) announced the new designs, describing them as a representation of Somalia’s national heritage and its place in the international community.

The redesign covers three passport categories: ordinary passports for citizens travelling abroad, service passports for eligible government officials on official assignments, and diplomatic passports for diplomats and other authorised state representatives.

The federal government of Somalia has intensified efforts to strengthen the country’s national documentation and immigration systems after decades of state collapse and institutional disruption. Reliable identity and travel documents are also important for facilitating international mobility, consular services and the verification of Somali citizens travelling or living abroad.

Somalia has in recent years worked to modernise its passport and civil registration services as part of wider efforts to improve public administration and restore confidence in government-issued documents.

However, the agency’s announcement did not provide details on when the redesigned passports will be introduced, whether existing passport holders will be required to replace their documents, or whether the new versions include changes to biometric and security features.

The unveiling therefore marks the presentation of the new designs, with further information on their rollout and implementation still awaited.
